Introduce “Da Lu” (Big Pull)  Tai Chi push hand techniques

                                                                          By Feng Mei 12/28/2009

There are no many people know about Tai Chi push hand "5 steps" and "8 doors" knowledge. The "5 steps" include: forward step, backward step, left step , right step and center stop step. The "8 doors" include: east, south, west and north 4 upright directions, and s-east, s-west, n-west and n-east 4 corners directions. In "8 doors" there are the 4 upright push hand techniques include: "Peng"(stick hand and buffer the attack), "Lu"(Pull backward), "Ji" (squeeze arm and push forward ) and "An"(Press forward or down). The 4 corner techniques include: "Cai"( left or right side press down and pull the wrest), "Lei"( left or right side block or punch), "Zhou"( left or right elbow attack) and "Kao"( left or right shoulder against).

The 4 corners technique is assist 4 uprights direction techniques. Tai Chi push hand techniques is basic on a circle direction, no matter "in" or "out" a circle, all basic on a circle push hand techniques.    The Tai Chi push hand techniques is also basic on square direction( 4 upright directions), no matter forward or backward, left side or right side of a square. Circle is for "in" or "out" techniques, Square is for "front" or "back" and "left" or "right" techniques.

"Circle" basic on "Square" and "Square" basic on "Circle" each other. "Square" is for "open attack". "Circle" is for "close defense". If you can understand how use the basic push hand techniques, that will be very good success, but beginning students easily tension whole body’s muscle, and body weight is not  balance, the body weight center always not in the center of both legs, easily on one side of leg or on one side of body, stand unsteady. For correct this problem, the 4 corner direction push hand techniques is useful.

Practice "Tai Chi Push Hand" should step by step, first practice "feet no move" push hand techniques, if practice it good, then go to "move feet" push hand techniques, later can practice "Da Lu"( Big Pull) push hand techniques, and the player should guided by high level Tai Chi Master, learn good in hand and leg movements techniques with whole body flexible movements techniques.

There are many push hand techniques inside "Da Lu"(Big Pull), not only "5 steps" and "8 doors" also "Shan"(flap hand) , "Jue"(break arm) and mixed techniques.

Introduce Certainly movement formula of   "Da Lu"(Big Pull) Tai Chi push hand techniques

Two Tai Chi players standing face to face no changing positions during practice the formula. If one attack then the other will defense till finish the whole formula of movement then they can change positions of attack or defense. For example if white player move right step punch right fist to attack, the black player will use right hand “Peng” (stick) on the white attack right wrest to buffer the attack power and don’t let the attack hand free to go, like picture1. The black player will change to "Lu" (pull) the white player’s right hand use right hand and left forearm like picture2, the white player will move right step into the black pllayer's middle of two legs to "Kao"(shoulder against) the black body use left hand push right elbow and use right shoulder against black player's chest area like picture3. Just the second, the black player will use the left hand "Peng"(buffer) the white player’s right shoulder and arm and use right hand flap the white’s face like picture 3(Shan), then the white player will step back avoid the flap and use right hand block and stick on black’s right wrest (peng) and with left forearm to Lu(pull) the black‘s right hand then they naturely change positions to opposite side as picture 2.

Peng( stick hand and buffer attack): if white player move his right step forward and punch his right fist to attack the black player's face, the black player will use right hand “Peng” and stick on the white player's right wrest to buffer the punch power and don’t let the white player's right hand free to go(picture1).

Lu(pull back): The black will step back right foot and Lu(pull) the white’s right hand use right hand and left forearm(picture2).

"Kao"(Shoulder against) & "Shan"( block or flap hand): the white will right step into the black's middle of two legs , use left hand push right elbow and use right shoulder against black chest area(3). Just the second, the black one will use the left hand Peng(stick and buffer the white one’s right shoulder and right upper arm, and use right hand "Shan"(flap the white’s face like picture3).

Then the white will step back right foot and use right hand stick and buffer on black’s right wrest (peng) like picture 1 opposite side, and use right hand & left forearm to "Lu"(pull) the black right hand like picture 2 opposite side, they naturely change positions.

Introduce Uncertainly movement formula of  “Da Lu” (Big Pull)Tai Chi Push Hand techniques

The uncertainly movement formula of "Da Lu"(Big Pull) push hand techniques is about flexible hands move "attack" with forward steps and "defense" with backward or sideway steps.

"An" (press forward or down): after white avoid black’s Kao(shoulder attack) and the white move left foot to middle of black's two legs and "An" (press black's body), then the black use left arm to "Peng"(buffer the white's push) like picture 4.

"Ji"(squeeze): the black change to step back left foot and use left hand & right forearm to "Lu"(pull) white left arm, then the white change to use right hand to "Ji"(squeeze) left upper arm to push black body away, like picture5

.

"Cai"(press down): the white right punch the black's abdomen, black step back and hold white's right wrest "Cai"(press down & pull) to make white unsteady then the black can prepare to "Lu" (pull) the white right arm use right hand & left forearm, like picture 6.

"Lie"(sideway block or punch): the black oraginally want to "Lu"(pull) the white's right punch, but he change to right step behind the white's right leg avoid the punch and use right fist from right side to punch white face to make him fall down, like picture 7.

"Zhou"(elbow attack): the white step back and use left hand block the black's right punch and use right elbow to attack black's chest, or when black want "Lu" (pull) white right arm, the white can bent right elbow to use elbow attack black's chest, like picture 8.

"Kao"(shoulder against): black left step into white's middle of two legs and use left shoulder against ( "Kao") the white body, or when white want "Lu"(pull black) the black left arm, the black can change to step into middle of white's two legs and use left shoulder to against white body to make him fall down, like picture 9.

"Jue"(break the arm): the white step left side to avoid the black's "Kao"(shoulder against) and use left hand & right forarm to "Jue"(break) the black's left arm, or the white oraginal want to "Lu"(pull) black left arm, but white change to "Jue"(break) the black's left elbow and force him to fall down, like picture 10.
